Spring has sprung and, with it, yard sales and flea markets are in abundance. If decorating with collectibles is something you fancy, now's the time to start. One person's throwaway might be your collectible. What can be called a " collectible" is open ended. Essentially, it includes any object that can be collected jn quantity - old kitchenware, stuffed animals from generations past, fine porcelain antique quilts or even small items such as thimbles, postcards and magazines. Decorating with collectibles can be a lot of fun. Not only do they add a unique charm to your home but they can also be a great source of conversation. Any guests will enjoy discussing how old a piece is or how you came to find it. Almost any room will welcome your collectibles. The challenge lies in finding the right collectibles to complement the room. For instance, to achieve the look of a country kitchen, you might consider collecting antique kjtchenware, bottles or washboards to display on a wall or on top of your cabinets. Accent them by hanging bouquets of dried flowers on an antique coat rack. Accent a romantic bedroom wall with a collection of delicate antique outfits and christening gowns. Other collections suitable for romantic settings are antique dolls and fine lace. Dress up an entrance hall, with a collection of old family portraits. Or perhaps a collection of antique tools would better suit your taste. |

The key to a successful collection is to buy what you enjoy and want to display. What you choose to collect should reflect your taste and style, Sometimes a collection wilI reflect the collectors occupation. A photographer, for instance, nay have a beautiful collection of antique cameras. Novice collectors sometimes make the mistake of starting by reading an article about a category of collectibles that seems to be rising in value. They begin to collect pieces with only profit in mind. This is very dangerous, since what might be hot today may be hard to sell later. If you're going to become a serious collector you should educate yourself by talking to other collectors and dealers. The more frequently you can attend shows and talk to dealers, the better. When you see something that you like at a show or antique shop, ask the dealer about it. Even if you have no intention of buying the piece, it's good education and dealers love talking about what they sell. Most collectors find the act of searching out, finding and buying a piece for their collection just as much fun as owning it. Scouting country auctions,, flea markets, antique shops and shows can be enjoyable and entertaining. So, thinking of starting a collection? If carefully selected and displayed, your collection. will only add to your home's personal charm and will give you years of pleasure. And, if and when it's time to sell, if you've chosen quality pieces, your efforts may provide you with profit as well. Happy hunting! |
