Comfortable mattress provides better sleep

You spend a third of your life in bed. Your mattress is the single, most used piece of furniture in your home. So buying a new mattress should not be taken lightly.

If you've gone shopping for a mattress lately you probably noticed the scope of choices has broadened dramatically. There are innerspring mattresses topped with plush fibres, foam mattresses, futons and adjustable beds and the list goes on.

To find out which suits you, test a variety. Don't just sit on the edge. lie down, roll over - really test :them. You may feel silly, but it's,the only way to know if it's right for you.

Quality construction will ensure that your set will provide you with eight to 12 years or. nightly comfort and support. Here are some things to look for.

Feel: How does it feel? The mattress should be from 8 to 15 inches thick. If the opposite side rises when you sit down, move on to the next one.

Sound: How does it sound? The mattress shouldn't creak or make annoying sounds when you roll over. An occasional noise from an innerspring mattress is to be expected, however.

Coil count: If buying an inner spring set, ask about the 500-coil system. This number is based on a double bed. A twin bed will have approximately 10-per-cent fewer coils than the 500 figure and a queen 15-per-cent more.

Louis Patenaude of City Mattress suggests that a twin, 312-coil system is best for a child.

Foam density: If you're buying a foam mattress, look for a density of at least two pounds per cubic foot. The more weight per cubic foot the better.

Size: Generally, the bigger the better especially if you sleep with a partner. In fact, more and more people are opting for queen and king size beds, which are wider and longer than the Standard double. This allows you to move more freely without your sleep being interrupted.

Buy the box spring: Sleep sets are designed to work together. An old box spring will only reduce the life of your new mattress and afect your sleep.

Cost: Anywhere from $99 for a budget-priced twin to $1,800 for a premium king-size set. My advice is to buy the very best you can afford. A good night's sleep allows you to function better during the day. To feel the best you can for the two-thirds of your life that you're awake, a good mattress is a wise investment.
